Commission types

Commissions Manager allows you to create different types of commissions:

  • One-time
  • Recurring products/services
  • Recurring accounts
  • Automatic
  • Levels

You can freely choose among them. You don't have to stick to one type since they can be used in conjunction with each other. Each type of commission has its own mechanisms, targets and features. As a general rule, keep in mind that the module does not allow you to add and pay commissions multiple times on the same target. Let's find out what are the main advantages of each of them.

One-time commissions

  • Target: invoices, proformas
  • Terms: fixed, percentage
  • Cycle: one-time
  • Creation: manually

One-time commissions are based on invoices and proformas and should be used when you want to manually pay a commission to a salesperson for an existing invoice or a proforma. For example, let's suppose that Sara, your client, bought an hosting package thanks to Mike, your salesperson. You can reward Mike by paying him a one-time commission for the invoice in question. You can either pay a fixed amount, a percentage or both.

In order to create this commission, begin by selecting the salesperson (Mike) and the client (Sara) then the module will show you all invoices and proformas assigned to Sara with filtering options. Select the invoice on which you want to pay the commission to Mike add a description (optional) that will be visible to the salesperson and define your terms (e.g. 5% + 2.00 EUR). Before confirmation, you can always find a preview of the commission that you are going to add that also shows you the ROI (Return of Investment). As soon as you confirm, the module will immediately assign the commission to the salesperson.

Recurring products/services

  • Target: products/services
  • Terms: fixed, percentage
  • Cycle: recurring
  • Creation: manually

This type of commission is based on products/services and should be used when you want the module to automatically pay a recurring commission to the salesperson as long as the product/service in question is renewed by the client. For example, let's suppose that Sara, your client, thanks to Mike, your salesperson, orders a VPS which costs 10 EUR / month. The module can automatically pay a commission to Mike every time Sara renews her VPS. Of course the module will not pay anything to Mike if Sara decides to cancel her VPS or if she forgets to pay the proforma for the renewal. Moreover, you can also put limitations to what Mike receives. You can have a recurring commission that never expires as long as Sara keeps her service active with you or a commission that lasts for a certain number of months. This is a good feature to use in case you want your salespeople to receive a recurring commissions only for a certain number of months.

There is also a very nice feature that we suggest you to always use. The feature is named "Recalculate on price change". With this option enabled, when the module has to pay the commission to Mike, it recalculates all terms based on the current "Recurring amount" value of the product/service. For example let's say that you decided to pay 20% to Mike. 20% of 10 EUR is 2 EUR. If for some reason Sara upgrades or downgrades her VPS, of course the recurring amount for the product will change therefore, here are the consequences:

  • With "Recalculate on price change" disabled, Mike keeps receiving 2.00 EUR even if the price of the VPS has changed
  • On the contrary, with "Recalculate on price change" enabled, Mike always receives the 20% of the current price

In order to create this commission, begin by selecting the salesperson and the client then the module will show you all products/services assigned to Sara with filtering options. Select the product/service on which you want to pay the recurring commission to Mike. You can add a description that will be visible to the salesperson (optional), define your terms (e.g. 10% + 1.00 EUR for every renewal), decide if you want to enable or disable "Recalculate on price change" option, set an expiration for the commission or make it lasting "Forever". As always, the module will show you a preview of the commission. As soon as you confirm, the module will start to pay your salesperson every time the client renews the product/service in real-time with no delay.

Recurring accounts

  • Target: accounts
  • Terms: fixed, percentage
  • Cycle: recurring
  • Creation: manually

Similarly to Recurring products/services, this type of commission works in the same way. The only difference is that instead of paying commissions based on products/services, the module pays commissions based on all payments made by a certain client. The other difference is that the module pays the commission to the salesperson on the first day of every month. For example, let's suppose that you want to pay a recurring commission to Mike, your salesperson, for the monthly payments you received from your client Sara. When you are defining terms, you can make a distinction between payments received for products/services, domains or the entire account. In other words, you can pay commissions as follows:

  • Pay 50% for all payments regarding products/services (renewals and new orders)
  • Pay 10% for all payments regarding domains (transfers, new registrations and renewals)

Alternatively, if you don't want handle products and domains separately, you can define an account commission that is valid for both. For everything else, all options and features of Recurring products/services commission can also be found here. Obviously there is no preview available since the commission is based on payments that can vary from time to time. Let us show you how it works with an example:

  1. On January Sara pays you 10 EUR for domains and 50 EUR for products/services
  2. On the 1st of February, Mike receives 1 EUR for domains (10%) and 25 EUR for products/services (50%)
  3. On February Sara pays you 20 EUR for domains and 10 EUR for products/services
  4. On the 1st of March, Mike receives 2 EUR for domains (10%) and 12.5 EUR for products/services (50%)
  5. and so on...

Automatic

  • Target: products/services
  • Terms: fixed, percentage
  • Cycle: recurring
  • Creation: automatically

This is a variant of Recurring products/services commissions. Both share the same features and mechanisms. The difference is that it allows you to automatically create recurring commissions instead of creating them one by one manually. As soon as a client orders and pays a product/service on which you set a commission, the module asks him to specify his salesperson from a list. Before you can start using this feature, first you need to tell the module who are your salespeople. At the top of the page there are two buttons:

  • Products/Services - from here you can define your terms
  • Salespeople - from here you can add/remove salespeople

Begin by clicking on Salespeople and use Add and Remove buttons to let the module knows who are your salespeople. Once done, move back to Products/Services to define your terms.

Levels

  • Target: products/services
  • Terms: fixed, percentage
  • Cycle: recurring
  • Creation: manually

This is probably the easiest way to pay commissions to your salespeople. Instead of playing with terms, products/services, clients, expirations and so on, you can simply pay a commission, on the first day of every month, based on the income your earned thanks to the salesperson with performance levels. The easiest form of level commissions are the fixed ones that work like follows:

  • Level Special: 5% + 10 EUR per client
  • Level Advanced: 10% + 10 EUR globally

You can create as many levels you want with custom names and terms and you can also create an unlimited number of assignments between salespeople and clients. Let's try to assign Mike to the following clients Sara, Dave and Robert based on Level Special. On the first day of every month the module calculates the monthly income brought in by Sara, Dave and Robert than here is what happens:

  • Mike receives 5% of the income brought in by Sara plus 10 EUR
  • Mike receives 5% of the income brought in by Dave plus 10 EUR
  • Mike receives 5% of the income brought in by Robert plus 10 EUR

Now let's try with Level Advanced:

  • Mike receives 5% of the income brought in by Sara, Dave and Robert plus 10 EUR

As you can see, the difference is that in the first scenario the module bases its calculations on every client individually meanwhile, in the latter one, globally. That said, levels can also be set as dynamic. You can have terms that look like follow:

  • Level Bronze ≥ 10.00 EUR /month receives 4% + 10 EUR
  • Level Silver ≥ 50.00 EUR /month receives 8% + 15 EUR
  • Level Gold ≥ 120.00 EUR /month receives 12% + 20 EUR

Basically this means that every month the salesperson is automatically moved to a specific level based on his performances as salesperson. With this kind of approach, your salespeople are pushed to try their best in order to receive higher commissions.
